About the Fund

Of the over 2,000 animals cared for by our shelter each year, the majority are cats.  Most of these cats have been living on the streets, fighting every day to survive in spite of cold, hunger, and the hazards of predators, automobiles, and even people.  These cats may come to us with injuries requiring special medical care, including long-term medication or surgeries.  In addition, these cats are often exposed to a range of ailments ranging from bacterial and fungal infections to a wide variety of viruses, some of which require long-term treatment.   Orphaned kittens also may require special kitten formula as well as extra care and treatment.

The expenses associated with treating some of these cats may be very high.  Adoption fees barely cover the cost of the spay/neuter, FELV/FIV test, microchip, and vaccinations provided with each and every cat.  General donations to the shelter are used to provide the basic necessities of life, such as basic supplies, building costs, and salaries for the staff who care for these animals every day. Treating a single injured or sick cat may cost hundreds of dollars or more.  Our goal is simple--to be able to ensure that when a quality life is possible, the expense of necessary medical care does not stand in the way of giving each and every one of these animals in need  a chance for a happy ending.

In order to accomplish this goal, we need your help.  That is why we have established the Meowsers Angel fund.  Through the support of caring individuals who want to make a difference, we hope to create a situation in which no adoptable cat is denied a chance at a quality life due to medical expenses.  While many angel cats are posted on the adoptable cats page, this page provides more complete stories of some of the cats who need your help the most now, as well as some of those who have been helped in the past.  We want to you to get to know some of these special kitties, and we will share some of their stories with you, hopefully to a happy, forever home.  Some of their stories are sad, and sometimes, despite our best efforts, we cannot guarantee a happy ending--but even when we cannot provide a "happily ever after", we can take comfort in knowing that we did the best we could.   Please note that we may have photographs of some of the cats featured on this page, including during times of  injury or illnesses.  As a result, some of the photographs on this page may be more graphic than those on other pages of our site.

Please consider helping these cats and our other special needs kitties by donating to the Meowsers Angels fund.  To pledge or donate to the fund, please follow the instructions on this page.

How the fund works:  Q and A

Q:  If I donate to the fund, how will my money be spent?

A:  All money donated to the Meowsers Angels fund will be used to help us to pay for veterinary care, medication, and any special food or formula required for our special needs kitties.

Q: I see that some cats on the "adoptable cats" pages, as well as cats listed here, are sponsored or need sponsors.  How are these cats selected?

A:  While every cat entering our shelter will probably require some help or medical attention at some point in time, some cats will require more extensive treatment.  Sometimes this is due to injury, genetic defect, or complications from pregnancy.  Other cats may require long-term treatment with antibiotics, special food or diet, or other expensive medications, such as fulvicin, the medication required to treat ringworm infections.  Orphaned kittens require formula and often need additional medical care due to weak immune systems.  While we hope that all cats benefit from this fund through the availability of improved medical care, the selected cats  have required care above and beyond that which we normally need to provide.

Below are just a few examples of the types of services your donations will help provide.  Many cats will require a combination of services, such as repeat follow-up exams or a combination of testing and surgery.  Some of these costs listed include basic office visits, etc, but may not include all follow-up expenses.

Approximately may be used for:
$50
  • an x-ray for an injured cat

  • formula and extra vaccinations for an orphaned litter of kittens

  • An ultrasound for a pregnant stray.

  • Grooming for a cat with mats so severe that they cause injury or severe pain

  • Laceration repair for a wounded cat

  • Basic emergency fee for an after-hours vet call (excluding other services)

  • Medication costs for a cat with a longer-term upper respiratory infection and ringworm

  • Removal of an infected tooth

$100
  • An emergency vet office visit (after hours) and basic exam

  • Basic testing such as FIP titer, basic blood testing, or wound bandage or splint

  • IV fluids and basic medication for a severely ill cat

$150
  • An emergency c-section for a pregnant stray with labor complications

$200 - $500
  • office visits, pre-op care, and surgery for a variety of injuries and illnesses, such as removing an eye or a severely damaged limb.

$600
  • Orthopedic surgery or ligament repair for a cat hit by a car or injured in some other way.

Q:  What happens when I make a donation?

A:  While donations of all sizes are appreciated and will help, with a minimum $50 donation to the fund:

Q:  I have donated to the fund before but in the past I have not sponsored a specific cat.  Why has the process changed?

A:   By matching you with a cat (or cats) who needs extra care or has benefited from the fund, we will be able to show our appreciation for your generosity, and you will be able to see better the impact of your donation.
