Lakeland Animal Welfare Society

Alumni / Happy Endings

Our shelter takes in more than 2,000 stray and lost animals each and every year.  Our staff, volunteers, and donors all work together in hopes of achieving our goal--a happy ending for each animal.  Some of our animals stay with us for months--or even a year or more, and in that time we grow to love each and every one of them.  Shelter work can sometimes be frustrating and disheartening, but the reward of knowing our friends are happy and loved keeps us going.  We love to hear from our alumni, and we would love to share some of their stories and letters with you.  We will post stories of alumni and letters from our alumni and their families on this page, and we will change frequently.  To see some our Meowsers Angels alumni, click here.

If you have adopted a furry friend from us, whether it was recently or many years ago, we would love to hear from you!  You can email us at alumni@lakelandanimalshelter.org

One of our goals is also development of a stronger alumni program...If you have any comments or suggestions of what you would like to see, whether it is events, merchandise, or something else, please feel free to email us at the alumni address...

4/2005:  Mike

Hi!

Do you remember Mike?
He was the crazy stallion morgan horse from the Walworth Co. rescue.

Well, Mike has been through a lot in the last year, and I'm proud to say that Mike has once again
became the pleasure horse he should be.
Mike spent the winter in Southern Illinois with a top notch trainer. He is now back home at the Double V,
enjoying being a horse. He is quite the riding horse now!
Mike hooves and body condition are now primo. Mike has put on about 150 lbs. since he was adopted.
His hooves are clean, with no splits or cracks.

Here are some pics of mike now:

Please share Mike's success story with others.
Thank you for allowing Julie and I to make a difference.
Most of all, Mike thanks you for giving him his spirit back!

Regards,

Bruce Varney

4/2005: Reese

Just want to update you on "Reese" (LAWS # 012679A).  She is a GREAT dog!!  She is a puppy, and has her moments, but we love her.

She completed "puppy class" last night!  I will send or fax you her certificate.  We plan on enrolling her for another session in a month or so.  We want her to mature a bit before she moves up a level.

Just wanted to let you know, we are very happy that Reese is now a part of our family.

Thanks!

Kathy and Jessi

3/2005:  Schnitzel

Just want to let everyone know that Schnitzel is doing just great.   She has settled in with the rest of our group, like she has always lived here.  She is learning the lay of the land, but still likes the security of her leash.   She has a great nose and has gone around the house picking up all the crumbs.  Our poor Oscar (15 year old dog) is getting tired following us around on our walks, he is not used to covering so much territory.  However, Schnitzel has  gotten a lot stronger.  She will actually run and hop around.  We are also going to try a new eye medication that may restore some of her eyesight.  She doesn't have cataracts.  She is really a sweetheart.   I'll keep you updated on her progress.     Marge Gifford

3/2005:  Georgio/Georgiana

Thank you very much for your message.  It was so informative, I sent it on to some friends, so they could understand a bit of what you're dealing with there at Lakeland.

I am happy to report that "Georgio", who we are calling Georgiana, is doing great.  She is a real joy and we love her already.  We are slowly exposing her to our resident cat, Joanie.  Joanie is Ms. Energy and when we met Georgiana, we thought she'd be a good energy match for Joanie, who is playful and friendly.  We also have a 3 yr old boy who is proud of being "gentle" with Georgiana.
By the way, we are acquainted with Dr. Sandra Miller, and thought of her right away when we learned Georgiana was from Lakeland.

Good luck to you in your work, and thank you for the information about Georgiana, and the insights into the shelter.  We appreciate your time very much.

Culligan

To the huge hearted souls who strive to keep Lakeland alive..my thanks to you, keep up the good work. :)

Hello, Annastacia here. I thought I would update you on Culligan. You guys seriously wont believe this. He's..perfect..for lack of a better term. He loves attention, and spends most of his day perched on my lap. He gives nose nuzzles, purrs constantly. He's always smiling. moreso, I've had a number of my friends come over in the past few weeks..and he's in love with all of them (they are in love with him as well) Seriously, he has to be the most well adjusted, sweetest cat Ive ever known. He still has his quirks9 like tearing around the house fullspeed lol)..and I think he's enjoying a second kittenhood..but that's perfectly fine. Culligan has loads of energy, even more love, and is very curious about everything from pens to my friends child who he loves to be petted by.
I have enclosed a pic I took only a few days ago, as I promised to update you with such. I think you can tell from the expression..he's very happy. I can only say that you guys must have some magic going on there at Lakeland and certainly some angels among you. keeping the spirits of these animals up. Giving them hope. And thank you for that.
Some people wrinkled their noses at me, when I said I found Culligan online, and that I planned on going 2 hours south just to get him. I proved myself though. And from the day I adopted Culligan on..I will forever spread the word about your facility. It was and is worth the 2 hour drive. Every morning when I come home, and he trots into the room and gives me his meow of hello..it's worth it.

Ill update as frequently as I can with photos..he's such a ham :)

yours sincerely,

Annastacia

Just wanted to send an email letting you know that Blackie (a.k.a Wrigley) is doing great. We have him enrolled in training classes and is responding nicely. He has learned to “wait”, “sit”, “lay” and even a “roll over” every now and then. He hasn’t had any accidents in the house and hasn’t tried to attack the cat even when she hisses at him. After we switched his diet to “Wellness” he has really calmed down without the sugars and corn in the typical food. Thanks for making the adoption process easy and I’ll try and spread the word about the great program that you run there.

Good Morning,

I get great joy and sometimes want to shed a tear from reading each edition of the Newsletter and I wanted to share the story of Lexus, the dog we adopted from Lakeland Animal Shelter, as well as a photograph.

My wife, Carrie, and I adopted Lexus, then Dottie, what we believe to be a MinPin and Dachsund mix, in December of 1999. She was in the kennel with at least one sibling and several relatives. The three of us lived in Silver Lake for several years before moving to Suffolk, VA in June of 2002. Lexus has adapted well to her new state and loves to run on the beach, off leash, nearly every Sunday. She is the love of our lives and we don't know what we would do without her. The attached picture is of Lexus helping her daddy dig a hole in the yard for a new magnolia tree.

Thanks, Jerry and Carrie

Minnie

[senior pastel tortoishell cat:  received summer 2003, adopted spring 2004]

She is doing great! And has more energy than I thought possible in an older cat. My other cats are accepting of her very well. Just thought you might be curious about how she is doing.

Thanks for all the great care you gave her over the months that she was at your facility!

She has even adjusted to accepting my hamsters and Zebra finches are not going to be her next meal. Its been fun seeing how she is adapting to her new environment. Just another success story for you to share will all your staff.

Thanks- Teri Tannar and "Minnie" Pearl!
